Bassem Mouhammad brings a remarkable blend of expertise, innovation, and leadership to the world of agribusiness and sustainable development. With a career spanning over two decades, Bassem has established himself as a pioneering force in integrating sustainable agricultural practices with economic growth and social empowerment. Born on April 7, 1978, and currently based in Lisbon, Portugal, Bassem’s journey is one of relentless pursuit of knowledge, innovation, and impact in the agricultural sector.
Bassem’s academic credentials are as impressive as his professional pursuits. He is currently furthering his expertise through a Ph.D. in Agricultural Innovation in Tropical Food Chains at the University of Lisbon, Portugal. His research focuses on unlocking the potential of tropical producers within global agri-food value chains, emphasizing sustainable development, gender equality, and youth empowerment. Bassem also holds a Master's degree in Agribusiness Management from Rome Business School, Italy, and a Mini MBA in Sustainable Food Supply Chains, showcasing his commitment to continuous learning and development.
Bassem's professional odyssey commenced in Damascus, Syria, where he significantly contributed to SME support and trade enhancement as an Info and PR Officer and later as a Senior Trade Policy Officer with the EU Commission. His adept skills in strategy planning, operations, and monitoring and evaluation have been pivotal in his roles across various international programs, NGOs, and UN agencies, including FAO and UNICEF.
As the Head of Resilience, Climate Change, and Livelihood at the World Food Program in Iraq, Bassem led groundbreaking initiatives to meet food assistance needs while fostering resilience and sustainable livelihoods. He was instrumental in implementing a comprehensive BMZ-funded project, launching digital livelihood initiatives for youth, and spearheading the green TVET for thousands of beneficiaries across Iraq.
In his current role as an Innovation in Agribusiness for Rural Development Researcher at the University of Lisbon, Bassem is at the forefront of developing academic research to exploit opportunities in global agri-food value chains. His work is geared towards developing entrepreneurial skills, innovative business models, and sustainability assessments in food and agriculture systems, aiming to strengthen the positions of tropical countries in global markets while promoting gender equality and youth participation.
